Basbousa recipe

Indulge in the decadent and rich flavors of Basbousa, a traditional Middle Eastern dessert made with semolina, soaked in sweet syrup, and topped with crunchy almonds, perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth and warming your heart.

  • Mix 2 cups semolina, 1 cup sugar, 1 tsp baking powder, 1/4 tsp baking soda, and 1/4 tsp salt.
  • Add 1/2 cup melted butter, 1 tsp vanilla, and 1 cup yogurt. Mix until smooth.
  • Pour batter into a greased 9×13 inch baking pan, score the top into diamond shapes, and top each with a sliced almond or pistachio.
  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-40 minutes until golden brown.
  • While the cake is baking, make syrup with 2 cups water, 2 cups sugar, 1/2 lemon juiced, and 1 cinnamon stick. Simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  • Once the cake is done, pour the hot syrup over the hot cake.
  • Let the cake cool, slice, and serve.
